The Scott Neve case is a tragic reminder of the dangers that young people face every day. It is also a story of hope, as Neve's family and friends worked tirelessly to bring his killer to justice.
The Crime
On the night of June 12, 1990, Scott Neve was home alone. His parents were out of town, and his sister was spending the night at a friend's house. Neve was watching television in the living room when he was attacked.
The attacker, later identified as Michael Robinson, entered the house through an unlocked window. He surprised Neve and attacked him with a knife. Neve fought back, but he was no match for Robinson. Robinson stabbed Neve multiple times, then raped him.
After the attack, Robinson left the house and went to a nearby bar. He told the bartender that he had just killed someone. The bartender called the police, and Robinson was arrested.
The Investigation
The police initially had few leads in the case. Neve's body was found in his bed, and there were no witnesses to the crime. The only evidence the police had was a bloody knife that was found at the scene of the crime.
The police sent the knife to the state crime lab for testing. The lab was able to extract DNA from the knife, but it did not match any of the DNA profiles in the state database.
The case went cold for over a decade. However, in 2003, the state crime lab developed a new technique for analyzing DNA. The lab was able to extract a more complete DNA profile from the knife, and this profile matched Michael Robinson's DNA.
The Arrest
Michael Robinson was arrested in 2003. He was charged with Neve's murder and rape. Robinson pleaded not guilty, but he was convicted in 2005 and sentenced to life in prison.
The Trial
The trial lasted for three weeks. The prosecution presented DNA evidence, witness testimony, and other evidence that linked Robinson to the crime. Robinson's defense attorney argued that the DNA evidence was not reliable and that Robinson was not the killer.
The jury deliberated for three days before finding Robinson guilty of Neve's murder and rape. Robinson was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The Aftermath
The Scott Neve case had a profound impact on the Neve family and friends. Neve's parents were devastated by their son's death. They worked tirelessly to bring his killer to justice, and they were relieved when Robinson was convicted.
Neve's friends were also deeply affected by his death. They remember him as a kind and caring person. They are grateful that his killer was brought to justice, but they still miss him every day.
