On the morning of December 7, 1941, the United States military base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, was attacked by the Imperial Japanese Navy. The unprovoked assault, which lasted just over two hours, resulted in the deaths of over 2,400 Americans and the destruction of much of the U.S. Pacific Fleet.

The attack on Pearl Harbor was a turning point in American history. It brought the United States into World War II and marked the end of its isolationist foreign policy. The attack also led to the development of the atomic bomb and the Cold War.

The Attack

The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was launched from six aircraft carriers that had sailed from Japan in secret. The first wave of Japanese planes arrived over Pearl Harbor at 7:55 AM. The planes attacked in two waves, targeting the American battleships and other warships in the harbor.

The American ships were caught completely by surprise. They were unable to launch their planes or fire their anti-aircraft guns. The Japanese planes quickly sank the USS Arizona, USS Oklahoma, USS California, USS West Virginia, and USS Nevada. The USS Tennessee, USS Maryland, USS Pennsylvania, and USS Utah were also damaged.

In addition to the battleships, the Japanese also attacked the USS Shaw, USS Cassin, and USS Downes. The three ships were all destroyers and were sunk in the attack.

The attack on Pearl Harbor lasted just over two hours. By the time it was over, the Japanese had destroyed or damaged 19 American ships and killed over 2,400 Americans.

The Aftermath

The attack on Pearl Harbor was a devastating blow to the United States. The loss of so many ships and sailors shocked the American public and led to widespread anger and outrage.

The American government quickly responded to the attack by declaring war on Japan. The United States also began to mobilize its economy for war. The attack on Pearl Harbor marked the beginning of the American involvement in World War II.

The attack on Pearl Harbor also had a profound impact on American foreign policy. The United States abandoned its isolationist foreign policy and became a leading force in the fight against fascism.

The attack on Pearl Harbor is remembered as one of the most important events in American history. It was a turning point in the war and led to the United States becoming a global superpower.
